Cross Country Ready for CCAA Championships

SAN MARCOS, Calif. The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's cross country teams will close at the season at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships this Saturday in Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario, Calif. Both teams performed well on the same course at the Cal Poly Pomona CCAA Preview on Sept. 2, with the women's squad finishing second and the men taking third. Natalie Rodriguez won the women's 4000m race, while Vahagn Isayan placed second in the men's 6000m. The CCAA is among the strongest cross country conferences in the nation, with several programs currently ranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II polls. The men's and women's team for Chico State and the men's squad at Cal Poly Pomona are ranked among the top 10 and both UC San Diego's men's and women's teams are ranked in the top 25. In regional polls, the CCAA has four teams in the top 10 of the West Region men's and women's rankings. Chico State's men's team currently sits atop the men's rankings at No. 1, followed by Cal Poly Pomona at the No. 2 spot. Joining the Wildcats and Broncos on the men's list are UC San Diego (No. 4) and SF State (No. 9). In the women's poll, Chico State is ranked at No. 2, with UC San Diego (No. 6), Humboldt State (No. 9) and Cal Poly Pomona (No. 10) also ranked amond the top squads. The Chico State men's team has won 14 straight CCAA championships, while the Chico State women's squad has won eight consecutive titles and 10 of the last 12. Twenty student-athletes will be traveling to the competition for CSUSM, with 10 runners representing each squad. As Candidacy Year Three members of the CCAA, the Cougars will compete in the championships and be eligible for All-CCAA honors but not be part of team scoring or displace other runners. The Course The course is comprised of 2000m loops on grass and hard packed dirt. Each loop has a 20 yard section of asphalt.
