Comments

(Marion, Ind.) With three meets remaining before the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships,  The CU women posted eight automatic qualifying performances while winning six events at the Indiana Wesleyan Midwest Indoor Classic.  Sophomore, Trinity Hulst won two running events and junior, Brittany Green won two field events.

Needing to run under 5:12 to earn a spot in the invitational section of the upcoming GVSU Big Meet, and meet the NAIA automatic standard, Hulst got help from teammate, Julie Oosterhouse. Acting as the rabbit, Julie covered the first half mile in 2:34. Hulst took over the lead and held it to the finish. Her winning time of 5:11.44 was just enough to accomplish both objectives. Two hours later, Hulst led from the gun in the 800 meters to win by over two seconds in a season best 2:20.81.

In the 600 meters, Oosterhouse followed the leaders through the first 200 meters in 31.6 then closed with a 65 second 400 meters to win in 1:36.80, qualifying for nationals for the third straight season. Kaitlyn Bronkema lowered her best time in the event to 1:40.38 taking fourth.

Completing the CU sweep of middle distance events, Cathy Coryell race a perfectly paced 1,000 meters, taking the lead off the last turn. Her winning time of 3:08.77 was just .19 off the freshman record.

For the second week in a row, Kaylee Carew paced the field in the 3,000 meters for the first twelve laps, setting fast pace until the lead pack dwindled to just two. Taylor's Hannah Schroder took full advantage and broke away in the final 400 meters. Carew finished second in 10:40.73, slicing eight seconds off her previous best.

Anita Souza led a 2-5-7 CU finish in the 200 meters, clocking 26.01 followed by Larissa Hamption (26.62) and Rachel Skinner (26.81).

The Golden Eagles enjoyed similar success in the field events. Brittany Green and Tess Odegard both cleared 5' 5" in the high jump. Green took first, clearing that height on her first attempt giving her the advantage as Odegard need three attempts. Both tied their personal bests, matching the NAIA automatic standard for the second time this season.

Next, Green bettered the national qualifying mark in the long jump, leaping 18' 11 ¾" on her final two attempts and winning by over six inches. Lindsay Lipa also improved her spot on the NAIA list with a new best in the triple jump of 36' 11", taking second place. Freshman, Gabby Reams secured her first trip to the national meet clearing 11' 5" in the pole vault, finishing in a tie for third.

Lipa, Oosterhouse, Souza and Hampton combined to win the 4 x 400 meter relay by over five seconds, improving their place on the national qualifying list to 3:59.78.
