Baker Posts Three NAIA All-Americans in Day One of Nationals

GULF SHORES, Ala. The Baker University track and field team earned three NAIA All-America honors on Thursday in day one of the 2014 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet.

Both Katie Thurbon and Stephanie Nelson each became three-time All-Americans on Thursday, as Thurbon landed a pole vault mark of 3.55m tying for 7th-place and Stephanie Nelson competed in the Javelin finishing fifth with her throw of 41.49m.

Senior Katelyn Wolken also earned All-America status in the women s javelin with her throw of 40.63m.

Thurbon finished the 2012 and 2013 NAIA Outdoor National Championships as the national runner-up and Nelson finished 2012 as the Javelin NAIA National Champion and finished as the national runner-up in 2013.

Valerie Schirmer led off the day for Baker in the women s hammer throw finals. She competed in the third flight and had marks of 45.81m, 48.44m and 49.22m. But failed to qualify for the final heat of nine throwers, finishing in 13th place.

Baker s women s 4x100 meter relay team shined on the track with its time of 47.21, a season best, to qualify for Saturday s final heat at 2:40 p.m. Their time was the sixth fastest of all 24 teams competing.

In the final competition of the day for Baker, Cody Viergever took home 16th place out of 18 in the men s javelin with his throw of 53.96m.
