[Men's Track & Field] Record Setting Day At Chabot/CSU East Bay Legacy Invite

Hayward, Calif. – The Warrior men's track and field team had a record breaking day the 2014 Chabot/CSU East Bay Legacy Invitational on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors 4x400 men's team of Craig Elliot, Jonathan Hernandez, Justin Whelpley and Wayne Smith set a school record with a time of 3:38.65 as beat UC Santa Cruz. 

Senior Wayne Smith led the way in the 1500 meter race with a second place finish.  Smith finished the race in 4:12.36, which was his best time of the season.  Junior Johnathan Hernandez was right behind Smith with his top time of the year at 4:13.49.  Freshman Craig Elliot took fourth with a time of 4:14.69, which was a personal best this season as well.  Sophomore Michael Basuini rounded out the top five with a time of 4:14.81. 

Freshman Justin Whelpley took second place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.53.  It was his top time and finish of the year.  Senior David Cummings took fourth with a time of 2:10.51, while Smith placed fifth with a time of 2:13.00.

Senior Sterling Shells had his best finish of the year in the 100 meters with a time of 11.67.  Senior Julius Smith took third with a time of 12.61.  Shells placed first in the 200 meters with another personal best time of 23.40 this season.    

Junior Nate Ellis recorded his best long jump of the season as he took first with a jump of 6.25 meter.  Freshman Kenneth Parker placed second with a jump of 6.20 meters.   The switched spots in the triple jump as Parker had his best jump of the season at 13.57 meters.  Ellis was second with a jump of 12.08 meters. 

The Warriors took fourth place out of 26 teams with a total of 109 points. 

The Warriors close out the season next weekend at Brutus Hamilton Invitational at the University of California.
