Comments

The Grand View women's track & field team won seven events, hit three national qualifying marks, and set two school records en route to a runner-up finish at the MCC Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday in Sterling, Illinois.

The Vikings finished with 194 points, just 19.5 behind champion St. Ambrose who won the title with 213.4 points.  Clarke was third with 120.5 points, while Mount Mercy (73.5), Viterbo (48), and William Penn (37.5) rounded out the standings.

In the sprints, Hannah Stouffer won both the 200m (26:07) and 400m (58.82) events. Stouffer's time in the 400m was a GV school record and hit the NAIA automatic qualifying mark. Ragan Duax was champion in the 55m dash, recording a time of 7.44.

Jasmine Nielsen came in first in the 3,000m run. Nielsen finished the race in 10:59.02.

GV saw three champions in the field events. Val Veiock won both the shot put and the weight throw. Her toss of 13.71m in the shot put was not only an NAIA 'A' mark, but also a new Grand View school record. Veiock's mark of 16.75m in the weight throw was also an NAIA 'A' distance.

Kelley Carden won her first MCC title, finishing on top in the high jump with a mark of 1.64m.

The Vikings were runner-up in six events – Duax in the 200m and 400m, Nielsen in the 600m, Kelsey Carbajo in the 5,000m, Colleen Frank in the weight throw, and the 4x400m relay team of Duax, DeDe Ayers, Holly Anthony, and Stouffer. Frank hit an NAIA 'A" mark in the weight throw with her toss of 16.74m.

Other highlights on Friday were third place finishes by Nielsen in the mile and Alyssa Cunningham in the 55m hurdles.

Following the meet, Stouffer was deemed the MCC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and Veiock was named the MCC Women's Field Co-Field Athlete of the Year. It is Veiock's second AOY honor.

The Viking track & field teams next compete at the Wartburg Invitational Saturday, Feb. 22, in Waverly.
