[Women's Track & Field] Garwood Crowned National Champion!!Published by
Johnson City, Tenn. – It is an understatement to say Kristen Garwood (SR/Springfield, IL) has excelled as a runner at Hannibal-LaGrange, but nothing compares to what she did in the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships on the afternoon of March 5th, 2016. Just two days ago in the preliminaries, it was Garwood who had the fastest time of 17:46.69. And then came the finals. Out of a 12 runner field, only one would be crowned the NAIA's best. Running one of the best races of her career, Garwood claimed her first ever national championship by winning the 5,000 meter run (5k or 3.1 miles) today with a time of 17:26.05. The next closest competitor, Michaela Werner from Oklahoma City University, stayed close behind Kristen during much of the race. However, with almost four laps remaining (1200 meters), Garwood began to lengthen her lead and it was at this point the most decorated track athlete in the history of HLGU showed the resolve of a national champion.
